Abstract:
A matrix model for the nomenclature of amphiboles. based on the nomenclature, developed and recommended for use by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names IMA in 1997 (IMA97) is proposed. The key feature of this model is that it is possible to represent nearly all minerals from the amphibole group-in a single two-dimensional matrix field. A variation of cations of structural sites С and T of the amphiboles were used as the basis of the matrix. The matrix was obtained by means of the digitization of continuous rows of isomorphic insertions in these sites according to the 50 % rule, in accordance with the MMA's recommendations. Five matrixes were created: model amphiboles, normative amphiboles, a formalized matrix of normal amphiboles, a logical matrix, and a matrix to determine the number of cations such as the L and M in the structural position of С amphiboles. The matrix model makes possible to visualize several regularities hidden in the 1MA97 nomenclature: the diagonal repetition of cation combinations in the structural sites A and В of the amphiboles. the presence of nonequivalent rows of cation combinations regularly each other in the same structural sites, a band rype of matrix, polarity of the band in the inverse by the distribution of integrated charge of cations of the structural sites A and В of amphiboles.
