The Greenland continental margin is a modern example of a passive margin formed as a result of the opening of the northern Atlantic in the Late Mesozoic–Early Cenozoic. The time of the beginning of spreading in the Labrador Sea is not precisely known. There were attempts to reconstruct seafloor spreading history, by the identification and calculation of magnetic anomalies in the Labrador Sea. It is supposed that the opening of the oceanic basin started 68 Ma ago.
