dc.description.abstract Certain morphological properties of anomalous electromagnetic emissions (EME) generated in the period before earthquakes make the nature and location of the emission sources a matter of major interest. Analysis of the available data suggests a model which postulates that while the detectable low-level diffuse emissions can be generated by elementary mechanoelectric transducers scattered throughout deformed rock in the earthquake preparation zone the emission measured at the surface is controlled by the properties of the rock layers closely underlying that surface. To determine the general principles that follow from the theory that the emitters are located in the near-surface layer, we consider a statistical modeling problem for distributed emitters
