dc.description.abstract Seismic tomography gives a very accurate, unambiguous picture of the velocity distributions of the seismic waves in any given zone. To construct a density model of some region by this technique, one needs data on the gravity field, as well as additional data that enable one to regularize the interpretation of gravimetric measurements. Among such data is independent information on the stress field in the given region. We have suggested a method for determining the properties of this stress state by investigating that anisotropy. Experimental measurements of seismic anisotropy can be used to determine not only the usual Lame components λ and μ, but also the additional component ν, which expresses the variability of the modulus in the medium, and the tensor εij. In our method, the seismic and gravimetric data must be interpreted in several stages. The method gives not only the distribution of the anomalous density, but also the distribution of stresses and elastic moduli in the region under consideration.
