dc.description.abstract Linear potential theory was used for a comparative study of tsunami excitation efficiency by piston-type and traveling-wave bottom motion. Wave energy was determined as a function of the size of excitation area, basin depth, the duration of piston motion, and the velocity of bottom traveling wave. The wave energy excited by a traveling-wave motion was found to be several times higher than that due to a piston-type motion, the displaced volumes of water being identical.
