The Article contains the analysis of the results of underground coal mining and the research work done in this aspect. On this basis the conclusion was made that the conventional method of mining with single workings had reached its limit, and its further application seems to be unable to increase the mining efficiency and to provide the proper conditions for safe mining operations under the complicated conditions, e.g. great depths, seams prone to rock bursts and sudden outbursts, high presence of gas up to 70-100 m3/min. Therefore, it is suggested to study the advantages of the multientry method for preparation of minable sections providing the entry protection both with yielding coal pillars and with strips from quick-hardening mixtures. As a result of experiments and the research work carried out for 5 years at the mines of the Vorkuta coal deposit, the findings were formulated and practical recommendations were made for the selection of optimal parameters for supporting facilities and protection of mine workings, and the technological task was solved in neutralizing the role of gas factor in load applying on the working face.
