dc.description.abstract Zones of active orogeny with rapid and irregular movements (e.g. the Alpine Himalaya belt) and a zone of slow movements (East European and Siberian platforms) are differentiated in two sets of precise levelling data. A coefficient correlation between the standardized levelling circuit misclosures of two epochs, r=0.5, was positively obtained for the areas of slow vertical movements. For zones of rapid movements, the correlation is close to zero. The results of statistical analysis show that the accuracy of differences between repeated levelling measurements is, as a rule, higher than the accuracy of the measurement themselves. Hence, we can draw some important conclusions and increase the reliability of determination of crustal movements.
