dc.description.abstract Different approaches to the Rb-Sr dating of clayey rocks are discussed, and arguments against using the whole-rock samples for this purpose are present. Much more effective and methodologically correct is the dating of fine illite subfractions. Some disadvantages of this method and its poorly elaborated aspects are also indicated. A more extensive isotopic-geochronological investigation of volcanogenic and volcano-sedimentary sequences is suggested to be a promising alternative for solving some basic problems in stratigraphy.
