dc.description.abstract The vertical structure of ocean water has been sufficiently well studied at present. Its principal elements—layers of discontinuity, warm and cold layers, saline and fresh layers, and their statistic and extreme characteristics—are known at all spatial and temporal scales. The horizontal structure of hydrophysical fields in oceans is less understood. Investigations were mainly restricted to the compilation of maps of temperature, salinity, density, and calculated currents.
