In the present paper we discuss the compaction of rocks in terms of a model of macroscopically uniform compacting deformation of porous rocks, i.e., unilateral compression produced by the weight of a rock body. The associated hypothesis that in this case there are no significant horizontal deformations of a bed under tectonically stable conditions is a fundamental principle of applied geophysics.
