OPTIMAL ESTIMATION OF EARTHQUAKE COORDINATES

Abstract

Recent new theory and numerical methods of mathematical statistics, which require large amounts of computation, avoid most of the a priori probabilistic assumptions and lead to statistical results that can be obtained by no other techniques. We shall present here a new stochastic method of evaluating earthquake coordinates involving a computational experiment with repeated statistical iterations, which requires no preliminary assumption regarding the distribution of the errors.
