Processes of hydrocarbon accumulation in oil and gas basins are controlled by various geologic bodies, including the so-called clinoforms, which certainly affect these processes. It is very important to determine the origin of clinoforms in sedimentary strata. Clinoforms usually are confined to zones of uncompensated downwarping. An example of such zones is the central Caspian, where geoacoustic profiling carried out to study the structure of the upper part of the sedimentary cover revealed various wedge-shaped sedimentary bodies. They are expressed most clearly in the structure of the Quaternary deposits in the southern part of the basin, where they were mapped in detail.
