Data on the lateral and temporal distribution of spectral reflectivities, primarily the spectral brightness coefficient (SBC), of the earth's surface are important in the development of methods and instruments for remote soundings of the atmosphere and surface of the earth, as well as in investigations of climate, optics, physics of the atmosphere, and of landscapes. We have previously compiled charts of the summer SBC's of characteristic ground surfaces the USSR in the spectral intervals of 0.54 to 0.56, 0.67 to 0.69, and 0.77 to 0.80 μm. We used our data and published measurements to calculate the average SBC's in the above spectral intervals. The results obtained by statistical analysis of the data base for characteristic ground-surface types in the Soviet Union can be used for various applied problems, e.g., for defining the technical specifications on the national multipurpose aerospace survey.
