Abstract

The accumulation of information about the stratigraphic ranges and areal distribution of various groups of fauna and flora has made it possible to pass onto the zonal differentiation of all the systems of the Phanerozoic and to achieve the striking effect on broad detailed correlations of sedimentary formations on the continents and in the oceans. It can be said without exaggeration that the main achievements of modern geology - from the study of the sedimentary formations of the oceans to the discovery of the most subtle nuances in the structure of the sedimentary groups of oil and gas bearing basins - are associated with the use of zonal stratigraphy. The use of zonal stratigraphy and the areas of its application are constantly increasing.
