Diatom complexes serve as indicators of the level and character of the anthropogenic load on water ecosystems. Silicon shells of diatoms preserved in bottom sediments provide insights into species composition of the diatom complex, which can be used to unravel the past state of ecosystems. These data together with the chemical composition of bottom sediments allow us to link changes in the species composition of diatom algae with the level of anthropogenic load.
