Detailed Paleogene stratigraphy is based nowadays on the zonal schemes of different microfossil groups. The specific character of their development and the use of microphytofossil zonations in the regional stratigraphy of various North Eurasian regions within the former USSR are shown using Eocene sediments as an example. In addition to the subglobal nannofossil zonations and the European dinocyst zonation approved by the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee (ISC), we used the zonal schemes based on diatoms and silicoflagellates and the interregional palynostratigraphic scale. The subdivisions of different zonations were correlated to substantiate the stratigraphic position of local and regional stratigraphic units in the standard Eocene scale using Meyen's concept of the chronostratigraphic interchangeability of characteristics.
