UPPER PLIOCENE AND LOWER PLEISTOCENE REFERENCE SECTION ON SAKHALIN

Abstract

At the present time the boundary between the Pliocene and the Pleistocene on Sakhalin is drawn on the basis of the angular unconformity observed between the deposits of these epochs or in those parts of the section where palynological analysis reveals sharply reduced amounts of thermophile elements and an increased population of herbaceous plants. Lithologic analysis indicates the presence among them of sediments of the beach, in shore shallow-water, sublittoral and lagoonal sediments. Paleomagnetic analysis has shown that the upper part of the section has normal magnetic polarity. Numerous diatoms were found in the deposits. The section is characterized by a definite cyclicity of structure, manifested in gradual recurrent and systematic succession of beds of different composition and origin.
