The paper examines the formation of oil and gas in sedimentary basins. Three types of sedimentary basins are recognized: heterogeneous with a powerful ascending flow of hot fluids, high realization of hydrocarbon potential and oils with a mixed chemical composition; homogeneous with a source of thermal energy in the basement of the basin and one generating unit in the lower part of the basin; and cryptogenic or sub-basement basins. The paper presents a model of the interaction between the processes of sinking, convective heating and oil and gas formation in sedimentary basins. It is shown that the nature of heating, which depends on the fluid dynamics regime of sedimentary basins is an important criterion for assessing their oil and gas resources.
