NEW DATA ON BOTTOM GEOMORPHOLOGY OF THE SEA OF AZOV

Abstract

In marine basins, sedimentation and zoobenthos distribution are determined by their bottom topography and bathymetry. Only general information is available for shelf geomorphology of the Sea of Azov. Because of the absence of detailed bathymetric maps (with isobaths of 1 or 0.5 m), the analysis of recent sediments and benthic communities was carried out without the consideration of bottom topography, resulting in distortion of real sedimentation patterns.
