A quantitative analysis based on the mechanics of fragmented bodies allows one to relate changes in the body-wave velocity ratios to changes in conditions at contacts of microblocks. This novel approach was used to develop a quantitative analysis technique to study the state of stress based on variations of the ratios of compressional to shear wave velocities. An analysis of VP/VS for microearthquakes recorded with ocean bottom seismographs in Buor-Khaya Bay, Laptev Sea, indicated a dominant compression in the crust of the area. Some evidence suggested possible extension in the sources of mantle microearthquakes beneath the bay.
