SEISMIC MOMENTS OF EARTHQUAKES IN THE BAIKAL RIFT ZONE AS INDICATORS OF RECENT GEODYNAMIC PROCESSES

Abstract

The investigation of spatio-temporal variations of seismic moments of earthquakes in the Baikal region shows three considerable episodes of change of the state of stress and strain of the Earth's crust between 1968 and 1994. The changes in the state of stress and strain are due to the variations of vertical component of SV-stresses. They testify to the fact that rifting can have a pronounced effect on recent geodynamic processes in the Baikal region.
