FIND OF SAAMIAN (EARLY ARCHEAN) KOMATIITES ON THE BALTIC SHIELD

Abstract

A newly discovered structure on the southeastern margin of the Baltic Shield, in an area where finds of Saamian high-magnesium volcanic rocks are likely, is the Vodlozero Block, with an area of as much as 40,000 km2. In its eastern part, amid granites and diorites of various composition and origin, we were able to find relicts of an Early Archaean greenstone belt, which is traceable for several kilometers near Lake Volotskoye.
